Back in Austin, during my senior year in college, I couldn’t wait to leave town, get the hell out.

Not that Austin, TX wasn’t a fantastic place (it was then, and still is now), I just wanted to leave college town behind, and try out the hyper-urban thing.

You know, the big city. Loft living. Minimalist furniture. Hip restaurants, every night. Art openings. Fabulous people. That kind of thing.

I wanted to swim with the big fishes, just to see if I could. And the big city seemed full of them.

So I spent the next two decades doing exactly that- Swimming with the biggest fishes I could, without getting eaten. New York, Chicago, London, LA, Paris.

I did it. And then some.

But somehow it never quite worked out the way I imagined it beforehand. Life never does, of course.

Imagining one’s idealized lifestyle is always a clean and tidy affair; but the real life is invariably a big ol’ pile of  mess.

But the mess notwithstanding, I had a glorious time, if I am honest with myself, if I am grateful.

The reality may never live up to what you want it to be, but hey, at least you tried.
And that’s all that matters, in the end. More than the result. WAY more.

Fighting the good fight. In the big city, or somewhere else entirely.
